So yesterday I decided to push on to Neels Gap. It was a long day, just under 16 miles, and so far I’m glad with how I feel. Soreness, but no pain. Being 20 certainly has its perks. One thing that made the day particularly challenging was climbing over Blood Mountain. It was a gradual enough of an climb, but the descent was pretty rough. I think that’s why everyone’s knees hurt. Here’s the view from the top:

Another reason to push was the new bear canister requirement section covering 6 miles before Neels. Hardly anyone uses bear cans who is thru-hiking, so the camp before that gets extremely over populated. That wasn’t too appealing to me, so I just skipped it.
Over the next few days rain is expected, but thankfully it won’t be too cold. My next planned re-supply is going to be in Hiawassee, about three days from now.
Here’s another photo that gives a sense of what hiking here in the morning is like.

All right, well I’ll probably talk to you guys again in Hiawassee.

spooky looking, look out for dementors 😀
Looks a bit like “Blair Witch Project” territory, or land of “The Witch” (brilliant film, IMO). Watch out for the Slender Man. Ever see “Deliverance”?
I’ve heard people refer to deliverance quite a few times. Thinking I need to see it when I get back.
You might want to wait until you are out of the south.
Calum, I am enjoying your trail commentary and photos! My mom, Jean Rogers, is a friend of your grandparents and I knew your mom when we were in high school in mission viejo. My questions are any idea of the weight of your pack and how much more does it weigh after a rain when things are wet? Also, are you using your nook for typing your posts? Finally, what is the bug situation? I used to backpack in my younger days and part of me would like to be doing what you are undertaking. Enjoy, be well and watch your step!
Thanks for all the kind words! When leaving after a resupply I’m carrying about 35 pounds, that’s including two liters of water. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have only one night of rain so far and I did notice a heavier pack, I’d say it added 2-3 lbs. So far I haven’t used my nook all that much, I’m just so tired, but it’s meant for only reading. Blog posts are done on my iPhone or a computer at a hostel. Bugs haven’t been a problem so far, but that’s soon to change once the weather heats up.
Hi, Calum, I am the mother referred to, and also a retired Sierra back packer, so I am enjoying your posts. So many more people than we used to see! I am very impressed by your efficient gear; you look very well prepared. Jean Rogers
